"Thank You Nana Akufo-Addo” – Ghanaians Praises Government

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) was started as Tarkwa Technical Institute (TTI) on 3rd November 1952.

But was officially commissioned by the Governor of Gold Coast, Sir Charles Noble Arden Clarke, on 7th October 1953.

In 1961, the name was changed to become the Tarkwa School of Mines (TSM) after reorganization. This was to assist in training required human resources for the mining and allied industries in Ghana.

In 1976, the government took the necessary steps to affiliate Tarkwa School of Mines with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). This was to enable TSM to offer degree, diploma and certificate programmes in mining and related fields. The name was again changed to KNUST School of Mines, In 1976, the government took the necessary steps to affiliate Tarkwa School of Mines with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). This was to enable TSM to offer degree, diploma and certificate programmes in mining and related fields. The name was again changed to KNUST School of Mines, Tarkwa (KNUSTSM).

The KNUSTSM, Tarkwa and the Kumasi School of Mines were put together and called the Institute of Mining and Mineral Engineering (IMME). In 2000, the conversion of KNUSTSM into a University was again strongly recommended by Louis Berger Inc. in association with Kwame Asante and Associates in a report on partial commercialization of KNUST.

In 2001, the Council of KNUST considered and approved proposals and recommendations of the Academic Board to merge the School of Mines at Kumasi and the School of Mines at Tarkwa into the Western University College of KNUST, Tarkwa.

The school name continued to change but the current name is the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).

In all these changes of names, there were infrastructure projects going on at the University. But some Ghanaians after coming across their current building gave credit to the President of the land, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to them, they knew the University very well and the structure was not as beautiful and massive as they are seeing now.

Some National Democratic Congress (NDC) members on social media tried to take credit for former President John Dramani Mahama.

But NPP members exposed them that the University was not like this when NDC was in power.

It is under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo that these huge projects have been captured at the school.
