Although the rapid urbanization in Accra Ghana, over the past three decades has helped to create jobs, increase human capital, decrease poverty, expand opportunities and improve living conditions for millions of Ghanaians, there have been many rising problems that have been created, and which; if not looked at, will affect us as a nation.
Accra is the capital city of Ghana, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa.
The Danes and the Dutch left the region in 1850 and 1872, respectively, and in 1877 Accra became the capital of the British Gold Coast colony.
Accra has since remained the capital, administrative, economic, and educational centre of Ghana, and has grown into a prosperous trading centre.
Looking at the current situation hitting the Accra City, it is necessary Ghanaians consider relocation of the Capital City of the Ghana.
Accra over the years has been struggling with so many challenges like congestion and sanitation.
Current data have revealed that, Accra is currently been hit by issues of high population density, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of affordable housing, flooding, pollution, slums, congestion and poverty.
Another major problem in Accra is vehicular traffic congestion.
Traffic congestion is a major phenomenon in Accra, especially in market centers resulting in massive delays, decrease in productivity and reduction in sales.
The main causes of vehicular traffic congestion in Accra can be related to over population, too many vehicles on the roads, bad attitude of drivers, traders, and pedestrians and many.
Due to a vast number of people, and problems with sanitation in Accra, people living in Accra are prone to conditions, which can lead to many different health problems.
With these urbanization and other problems hitting the city of Accra, it is very important that, the capital is relocated to another city, preferably to Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana… while Accra city still remains the commercial city of the country
