Unperturbed: EC announces safety protocols for mass voter registration exercise

It appears that the outbreak of the coronavirus is not even enough to convince the Electoral Commission to rescind on its decision to hold a mass voter registration exercise ahead of the 2020 General Election as it has announced safety protocols that will guide the exercise.

According to the Director of Communications at the EC, Sylvia Annor, they have put in place measures to ensure that the exercise does not jeopardize the government’s efforts thus far in dealing with the disease which has claimed 31 lives in Ghana as of Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

Sylvia Annor, in media engagement, disclosed that not more than 25 people will be allowed at a registration centre at a given time.

This is to ensure adherence to the social distancing etiquette that has been announced by the government.

“At each point in time we will ensure that we do not have more than 25 persons including the officials at any registration centre,” she said.

Sylvia Annor added that there will be temperature checks at the various centres.

Also, a provision will be made for Ghanaians to sanitize or wash their hands before joining the queue.

“People coming to register will be given hand sanitizers before they enter the registration centre, you need to wear a face mask, without a face mask you cannot enter a registration centre.  There will be no crowding at the registration centre,” she added.

Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare says that the Electoral Commission can still compile new voters register while adhering to measures to control the spread of COVID-19.

He says that since people can still transact business at the bank, it is possible for the EC to use the same method to control its crowd during the voter registration exercise.

“People have been going to the bank to withdraw money; it’s the same method. You control the crowd, and in Ghana, if you want to control the crowd it’s very simple,” he argued.
